"So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the Lord."
Joshua's men took some of the Hivites provisions from Gibeon without asking God first. As a result they made a covenant without knowing or seeking the truth about where these men were from.
Often times we don't pray or seek counsel in God's Word when we are embarking on a new venture. Why do you think ultimately the Lord doesn't bless us when we decide to take matters in our own hands?

It's ultimately God's choice because our life is his to control. If we take matters in our own hands we could e interrupting with Gods plan for us.
